How to : Navigate a New Office
By Atira Barber-Ellis
You remember that super anxious feeling you’d get on the first day of school? How even after you’ve picked out the perfect outfit and have the most aesthetically pleasing stationary you’d still feel like a stranger stepping into an all new world?
Yup, that still happens in the adult world when you start a new job, cheers mate!
No worries though; we’ve got all the tips you need to navigate and slay your workspace when you’re the new kid on the block.
Don’t Make Assumptions
Ask all the questions you can before you get started. Make sure you know exactly what’s expected of you so that you can kick that newbie anxiety out the door as soon as you get in.
Get to Know People
You need to know the team you’re working with, new kid. Get to know people, their roles, their relationships with each other and who calls the shots.
Be Friendly But Respectful
Don’t stress on being too casual, kid. Focus on putting your best foot forward. Make a bomb first impression and start building relationships ASAP!
Remember: First impressions aren’t just the first day so don’t get toooo comfortable too soon – make sure you’re striving to make extra good impressions your first few weeks.
Say Yes When You Can!
After work drinks? Yes! Tours? Yes! Taking on Projects or Helping Out? Heck Yes!
Make sure that you’re not taking on more than you can chew though.
Saying yes isn’t going to mean anything if you’re so busy that you never finish a project
Make it Home
Make your desk/space as comfortable and personal as you can. You made it here!
You’re not going to know everything on the first day new kid so be patient with yourself. Just because everything isn’t perfect on the first day doesn’t mean it’s not the right fit. Let things settle in and go with the flow.
Take it on the Chin
If you make a mistake, oh well- own up to it and learn from it. Integrity will always go a long way.
